Leading an anti-trendy life means prolonging the lifespan of the things we buy and own. It means pursuing a life that is nourishing, satisfying and meaningful on an everyday basis; not only on weekends and holidays. And, it means embracing heaviness; heaviness as substance, solidity, and continuity as well as inviting challenges and a degree of hardship into one’s life. Because lightness can be unbearably meaningless. Without real purpose, without drive, without the feeling of having direction and of having something to fight for, and without heavy, thought-provoking (aesthetic) experiences meaningless lightness takes over. And when that happens, we are more inclined to indulge in momentarily satisfying consumer-ventures and to attempt to spice up our trivial everyday lives with exotic holidays.
Heaviness is uplifting. Heaviness is strengthening. Heaviness is sustainable. Not the gloomy kind of heaviness that characterizes a state of depression and hopelessness (which we must do our utmost best not to fall into when listening to the discouraging facts about climate changes and pollution), but the empowering kind of heaviness that fills your life with substance, when you engage in meaningful projects; in building sustainable communities, in experiencing and creating thought-provoking art and literature, in the design of ecological solutions and products, in empowering people in need, in fighting for animal rights, in building resilience in our children etc. etc. Doing so might not be easy. It might even at times be unbearably challenging and hard. But the substance that this kind of heaviness adds to your life is worth all the hardship and all the challenges. #theimmaterialist #antitrend #heaviness #sustainability #unbearablelighnessofbeing #durability #resilience #antitrendyliving #upcomingbook
