If the Queen of England can give up fur, so can I. #LoveFauxFur
I’ve yet to replace the faux-fur electric blue, teddy coat of my youth that I wore during my university years. I discovered it in a tiny shop on #ChurchStreet in #London called #Amazon that I’m sure no longer exists.
This was a time before Amazon, Amazon Prime and “free shipping”, when you could walk into a boutique and find something not available to buy later online, in just two unassuming clicks.
My cocoon shaped faux-fur coat became my signature item during winter months. Whatever I wore underneath, in whatever color would be enveloped. It was an armor against the gushing winds in the dark tunnels of the London Underground and a buffer against everyone that brushed past me in haste on their way to work during the rush hour.
Wherever I arranged to meet friends, whether it was by the fountain at Kensington Station, under the big clock at Victoria or next to the newspaper stand at Bayswater, they could easily see if I was there or not. It was my way of saying “I’m here!” before a time that a text would say it for me.
Lightweight and comforting in cold dreary evenings, it was like walking around in a cozy blanket. We were inseparable. I had no use for any other coat.
Over the years its buttons fell off one by one, the lining under the arms tore and the fur became flat around the sleeves and collars. Reluctantly, I stopped wearing it. It disappeared as if we had never been “one” and it had never existed.
I had forgotten all about it until one chilly day I saw my mother at the far end of our garden tending to a rose brush. I waved at her. She smiled back, and pointed to what she was wearing. A true gardener in all respects. She was in the business of giving new life to things, even my old blue coat.
