It abolished slavery in the United States and provided that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.". When slavery was legal in the US, over 4 million people were enslaved. Currently, there are more than 40 million invisible people enslaved around the globe and human trafficking generates $150billion a year. The types of slavery that exist today are sex trafficking, forced labor (including garment industry), debt bondage, domestic servitude, child soldiers and organ harvesting.
