2015 was a remarkable year in handbag design. In January of 2015 Alessandro Michele took over as creative director for Gucci and basically set the fashion world on fire. Since then his impact and direction for Gucci has already become legendary. His first handbag design was the Dionysus. This vintage inspired and dramatic bag showcases a large clasp tipped by two tiger heads, an acknowledgement of the bag’s namesake, Dionysus, who is depicted riding a chariot pulled by tigers.
Nicolas Ghesquiere’s first fashion show for Louis Vuitton was in 2014. Under his direction, many coveted bags have been introduced to the market, including the Pochette Métis and LV Twist. The Pochette Métis was actually launched in 2012 to little fanfare. However, under Nicolas, the bag was updated and reintroduced in new styles. It all of a sudden became so popular that the bag sold out online and in boutiques and began to generate long waiting lists. The LV Twist captures the smart and charming design elements of Nicolas Ghesquiere. The clasp on the Twist is even architectural with the “L” sliding over the “V.”
Jonathon Anderson was named creative director for LVMH’s Spanish fashion house, Loewe, in 2013. His first handbag, the Puzzle bag, was a part of the SS15 men’s collection fashion show. This bag is a true testament to modern craftsmanship. It requires a leather cutting laser machine and 524 different actions just to produce one bag! Since its debut, the Puzzle bag has become Loewe’s most sought after handbag.
