This is a question I’m getting a lot these days as more and more people are (finally) waking up to the absolute necessity of working at the body, felt-sense, nervous system, and movement (motor) levels because this is the only way to fully recover, regulate, and restore resilience back to their mind-body connections, not to mention their lives. . Everything in life is just one foot in front of the other. One day at a time. One step at a time. Quit looking back or forward and look at right here and now. I want you to close your eyes count to five and then tell yourself what you want for yourself and why. Finding why you need to do something is where the journey begins. My why is my kids, my family, and more importantly myself. Self care isn’t selfish it’s NECESSARY. I started a journey in April to be a better mom, a better person, a happier more patient person, excited for the day and I’m happy to say I’m 1,000% better everyday. And the journey doesn’t end. There is no destination. You always push everyday to be 1% better than you were.

Wonderful opportunity today to connect with the middle school students from St. Margaret School... the students & staff were so engaged and welcoming - thank you! Through storytelling & song, we shared the importance of open, honest expression and offered some tools to help the kids maintain and improve their mental health. Cognitive psychologists studying the nature of attention have found that we have fast, involuntary responses to attention-grabbing stimuli such sudden light changes or stimuli appearances or disappearances. Given how unconscious these processes are, it’s easy to underestimate how easily our attention will be redirected based on the biological mechanisms in the brain that are constantly scouting for threats and changes to our environment. Rather than fighting against these adaptive changes our brain has made to interact and cope with the world, let’s use this knowledge to ‘hack’ our productivity. When we’ ‘turn off’ attention-grabbing stimuli, we limit the number of distractions that will inevitably drag our attention away from our tasks. We can then be more in control of where we direct our attention and when.

I am excited to share with you the fact that we have another eating disorder treatment story to add to the collection on my blog… This is C’s story (@nutritionlabelieve) who has a very inspiring story to tell of her experiences in residential and hospital treatment and where the treatment let her down and where it helped her. Ultimately though it sounds like C has worked incredibly hard to save herself and is another courageous woman fighting for her freedom from an eating disorder which makes her another superhero in my eyes. I hope you will read C’s story - it really does highlight where traditional treatment is failing us -what they are doing badly and what can be helpful if a different approach is used. And of course, these stories we are collecting of treatment experiences for eating disorders are to also help raise awareness of the plight we face in eating disorder treatment around the world… where we are having to endure poor treatment and it is to fight to get things to change - if not for us then for future generations. So, please also check out the petition to #changeEDtreatment - the link is also on my website and please, please sign it and share it - I believe lives could be saved or at the very least, people could be enabled to recover much faster than now, if treatment is adapted to help and not hinder the patients. Things won’t change though unless we do something… unless we, the people treatment is aimed at, tell them where they are going wrong, why would it change? But I digress - ultimately, this too is say a huge thank you to C (@nutritionlabelieve) - her words and her story are moving and powerful and I cannot thank her enough for sharing them.

Sometimes I think to myself, “where would I be currently if it weren’t for the most important people in my life?” • That question can not be answered because my best friends have helped me make it to this point in my life. Some of them I have known since elementary school, like Anna, and some I have only known for six months. Each of them meaning just as much as the others. • I think I have truly built a great support system that understands my mental illness and is also willing to support me along the way. These people make me feel safe and comforted in times of need but they also make me smile and laugh when the time is right. • Surrounding yourself with people that you can trust and rely on is a major part of recovery. You should be able to rely on these people for support and comfort. You should trust them fully and never doubt if they have your best interests. On the flip side, you also need to support and comfort them in their times of need. • I believe that one way to make it though life successfully is by creating your own support system. One that will never diminish. • Let me know in the comments below who is apart of your support system. Are you familiar with this fact? It is SO important we are aware of what our family history is. Some mental illnesses such as substance use disorder or bipolar disorder have a genetic component. The more we are educated early on, the better prepared we will be as we grow.
