It is nature’s irony that a lush green valley—rich with a variety of flora, gurgling streams, ample rainfall and large tracts of flatland—should be completely inhospitable to cultivation and therefore civilization. That’s Dzukou valley in Nagaland for you. The native Angami tribe laboured in vain for years to farm the land but finally gave up, christening it Dzukou, which in the local dialect means dull and soulless. Straddling the north eastern states of Nagaland and Manipur, Dzukou valley is stunningly beautiful. While a day trip to Dzukou is doable, we recommend an overnight stay, especially during the winters. Though temperatures dip as evening falls, going well below zero at night, it is worth the effort simply for the spectacular view of a million stars lighting up the night sky. The peace and solitude is overwhelming and tempts you to stay up late, but be warned for you don’t want to miss the equally amazing morning views. An off-white of settled frost replaces the green of the day before. As the sun becomes brighter, the frost turns into a low-hanging cloud of mist over the hills. Visit Dzukou and you’ll find every reason to thank nature’s irony. Ward’s lake is a must-visit place when in this pristine north-eastern city. Also known as Pollock’s Lake, this artificial water body is encircled by an extensive lush garden and lies in the middle of the city. The lake is named after the then Chief Commissioner of Assam, Sir William Ward, who started the plan for the establishment of this lake. It was later on constructed in the year 1894 by Colonel Hopkins. .It is popular amidst locals, family vacationers and honeymooning couples, as a picnic spot. .
