In order to understand trauma we must understand the nervous system.
When our body feels in danger or under threat, our primal survival mechanisms kick in.
The body must decipher between three options to protect itself: fight, flight or freeze.
We often see the fight and flight response associated with anger, anxiety, irritability, aggression, nervousness.
Depression, shut down, numbing, deadness, feelings of stuck or frozenness, are typically associated with the freeze response.
And in the middle of our optimal zone we find our ability to engage in relationships, connection, conversation, social engagements. In short, we can experience life.
We feel safe enough to let our survival guards down and connect with other humans.
If you are struggling with chronic anxiety and depression, there is a good possibility that your system is stuck on auto cycling through these responses.
