Well, there's an easier way!⁠ .⁠ .⁠ Every fitness fanatic, cardio bunny and health enthusiast probably knows that to lose fat you need a negative energy balance...⁠ .⁠ .⁠ Understanding the negative energy balance (a calorie deficit) is part of the ABC’s of fat loss - energy expenditure has to be greater than energy intake in order to lose weight. ⁠ .⁠ .⁠ So, where energy expenditure is concerned, you can diet, reducing your calories to ensure you’re eating below your maintenance level.⁠ .⁠ .⁠ You can also increase your energy expenditure, in effect bringing up your maintenance calories with increased activity, but not adding any additional food.⁠ .⁠ .⁠ But, there's still a missing piece of the fat loss puzzle – non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT).⁠ .⁠ .⁠ Activity thermogenesis can be broken up into two categories:⁠ ⁠ Exercise activity thermogenesis is energy expended from exercise that we intentionally engage in (anything you do at the gym, going on a brisk run, etc.). We focus on activity thermogenesis – calories burned while exercising – when attempting to lose weight.⁠ ⁠ Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do when we’re not sleeping or exercising (hence the “non-exercise”). Mowing the lawn, walking up a flight of stairs to get to the office, even the hour of fidgeting after a strong cup of black coffee in the morning are all great examples. Get the most out of: BB Back Squat Part 3 of 3 - In this final part we will look at alterations we can make to increase quad activation as well as what a set to failure should look like - 1️⃣ VARIATIONS The use of wedges under the heels can not only increase quad activation but it can also be a useful aid if ankle mobility is hindering depth ✅ The stance doesn’t have to be as wide when using wedges because the knees can travel further ✅ If the goal is to recruit as much quadriceps as possible, wedges should always be your go to even if you have great ankle mobility ✅ If you don’t have access to wedges, you can either use olympic weight lifting shoes or you can place a 5 lb plate underneath your heel —— 2️⃣ FAILURE SET Here is what a set to failure should look like and some considerations when it comes to coaching it ✅ Because of the complexity of the movement, intensifiers are not used here besides a rest pause ✅ When it comes to properly spotting you need to go all the way down with someone and be there at all times ✅ Once technical breakdown starts to kick in, take a few extra deep breaths at the top and try to regain form ✅ If the back starts caving and/or you are no longer holding positions, the set is done ——— 🤳 If you found this helpful, please like and share!
