QOTD: How far into a book do you read before giving up? I am NOT an expert. I want to be sure that’s heard, I am not an expert. I am, however, fascinated by first chapters and how to write them well, and along my search I’ve discovered some fantastic tips I’d like to share. These are tips I implemented into book three, and the positive feedback I’ve gotten is beyond what I got in my first two books, so it’s helped me a lot! START STRONG! Pretend your first paragraph will be entered into a competition and write accordingly. A good hook is essential to capture the lingering buyers who wander the store’s bookshelves. Lead with action, NOT AN INFO DUMP. Give the information necessary and let the rest bleed through the following chapters. This is the most important advice. I’ve heard ‘you insult the readers intelligence by assuming they can’t figure things out on their own.’ We don’t need the info dump. ADD CONFLICT. Right away give us a reason to care. Make us want to turn the page because we need to figure out why there’s a dead body or why the king is coming to visit your little farm. At the end of the chapter, can you answer the question ‘what happened this chapter?’ with anything besides “I set the scene and introduced the character? That’s how you know you’ve added conflict. BE CAREFUL WITH DESCRIPTION. At this point, we don’t care about your characters, so we don’t want to know every little detail about them such as why they took this job or the story behind their tattoo. If it’s relevant to this moment, then include it, but too much will bore us. I’d even say limit your physical descriptions. It’s much more powerful to notice the color of someone’s eyes when they are on chapter ten and having a moment, then to list it as a bullet point in chapter one. INCLUDE A STRONG COMPELLING CHARACTER. One that we are ready to bind ourself to for the rest of the book. The first chapter gets A MINIPLOT AND ENDS WITH A CLIFF HANGER. START THE BOOK AS CLOSE TO MAIN STORY AS POSSIBLE, instead of giving us a chapter of introduction. Alright!! Again, this is just advice I’ve heard that’s helped me, I hope it helps you too!
